The unique Pistol Wheel X-Celerator is a complete accelerator upgrade kit featuring superb workmanship, providing your bug improved pedal performance and greater appeal. This upgrade boasts the same accelerator lever design found in all our X-CELERATOR Kits, along with the quick and smooth action of the new machined 6061-T6 aluminum wheel. THERE IS NO FLAT PEDAL IN THIS DESIGN. Your foot is in direct contact with the aluminum “Pistol Wheel”.
Many people ask about the difference between the old Roller Ball and the new Pistol Wheel from ClassicBugParts.com. The old throttle linkage design is outdated and needed an upgrade. The problem with any single-arm “Roller Ball” is that they use a single accelerator arm, which allows the arm to wobble from side to side and creates friction, and is even known to bend out of shape. This can put strain on the accelerator cable, which is then prone to break at that point. Many have experienced problems due to this while they were driving.
WE HAVE THE SOLUTION: This vastly improved “Pistol Wheel” accelerator was designed by Ron Motrenec of Classic Bug Parts (formerly Unique Parts). The new design uses a double-reinforced arm which operates like a door hinge and eliminates the wobble. The Pistol Wheel’s lever is laser-cut, formed, and welded together, resulting in a strong, stiff accelerator lever. This superior lever solution pivots around a longer CNC-machined and polished 303 stainless steel pivot pin, providing a more stable, effortless feel to the pedal.
Take a look at real American-made quality craftsmanship…

We have also tailored the arm location relative to the tunnel for proper alignment of the throttle cable to the accelerator arm. This further reduces strain on the cable. Also, the 6061 aluminum wheel has been sized for better clearance to the bulkhead for dual carburetors. The lever action is laser-cut, formed, and welded together (and then powder-coated!), resulting in a strong and stiff accelerator.
This innovative “X-CELERATOR” double-hinged lever (originally called the “BOX Roller Pedal” was featured in the February 2012 HOT VWs Magazine, page 78, under “PARTS BIN” (click to view original article). Excerpts of that article mention “Put an end to the floppy roller pedal…”, also “As parts begin to wear out over time, the drilled hole in the roller pedal no longer fits around the pivot pin, causing the roller pedal to flop side-to-side…” And “The BOX Roller Pedal (renamed X-Celerator @2015)… [allows] the throttle cable to move in a straight line in relation to the tube where previous roller pedal designs have the throttle cable bending away from the tube, and that added side load pressure can cause cable failure.”
NOTE: These old design problems are eliminated with an X-CELERATOR lever, at the heart of all ClassicBugParts.com accelerator kits, all while its smooth action adds pleasure every time you press on the gas...

The silky-smooth and accurate response of the “Pistol Wheel” X-CELERATOR will bring you an even closer bond with your bug…

If you have already installed an after-market performance carburetion system on your car, please review this short YouTube video showing you how to trim your new accelerator control arm to achieve full throttle: https://youtu.be/mvEu1TiFlok
NOTE: We suggest you do a pre-install to adjust the accelerator control arm (by trimming the adjustment tab) before completing the install. To do this, mount the cluster to the tunnel, leaving the clutch cable off for now and inserting the pivot pin from the opposite side. Then hook up the throttle cable to the accelerator lever. Now you ideally want to have a friend give you a hand for fine tuning. While he pushes the accelerator pedal all the way down, you can be looking at the carburetor to check the travel for full throttle. If you are not achieving full travel, you can easily take the pedal lever out and trim off just a bit of the adjustment tab (1/16″ at a time, preferably with a dremel tool or file), replace the lever, and have your friend push down the pedal all the way again while you recheck the travel on your carb. Repeat this until you get full travel on the carb, but not too much (which can break cables). Now is the time to take the cluster out and do a complete installation.
